As homeowners become more aware of and concerned about the dangers of toxic mold
in their homes, they can learn much from DIY's informational five-part workshop
on this potentially hazardous problem. The workshop covers what is toxic mold
and how does it get into a home; the specific health hazards associated with
toxic mold; hot to inspect a home for mold or potential mold problems;
preventing mold from occurring; and treating homes to remove toxic mold. DIY
includes an online mold test so that viewers can assess the potential risk of a
serious mold problem developing in their homes.

Where
Insurers Stand on Mold (Detroit Free Press, MI - February 17, 2003)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In hard-hit states like Texas, nearly all home insurance companies stopped
covering mold damage recently. Some insurers have done the same in Michigan,
even though some companies say mold claims have not risen a lot in this state.
In any case, know that your claim is weak if mold is caused by a long-term leak
that should have been fixed, rather than a single event like a frozen, burst
pipe.
Here are
Michigan's five largest home insurers and their current policies regarding mold.
Mold Facts
(Detroit Free Press, MI - February 16, 2003)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Black mold, or Stachybotrys atra, is the latest big scare for home owners.
Here's a fast look at the basics:
Stachybotrys is not as common in Michigan as in hot, humid states, but it does
occur. It's one of four well- known toxic molds, all of which you want to
eliminate from your house.

Mold
lawsuits may rise in N.Y. (New York Daily News, NY - February 17, 2003)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New York property owners may soon be attacked by a rash of mold lawsuits that
have already crippled owners and insurers in other states, according to a
published report.
The suits
could clog courts, devastate owners and insurers, and drive up homeowners'
insurance costs, the report said.
In the
epidemic growth of allergies, environment seems to play a larger role than first
thought (Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel, FL - February 23, 2003)
No one baby-sits for 2-year-old Grace King.
At
birthday parties, the sociable girl sometimes leaves before cake is served.
That's because Grace is allergic to both milk and eggs, and cake or ice cream
could send her to the hospital, says her mother, Lauren King, of Boynton Beach.
Insurer
ponders dropping builders - American Family may cut coverage for smaller firms
(Rocky Mountain News, CO - February 22, 2003)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Even as a bill moves forward to make it harder to sue home builders, the
industry could take a hit as one big insurer of companies leans toward dropping
coverage for small and medium-size builders in Colorado.
The
Senate on Thursday passed a measure to cap damages homeowners can collect from
builders and now must work out the final details on House Bill 1161 before it
goes to Gov. Bill Owens for his signature.

School Mold - Mold prompts students' move (Trenton Times, NJ - February 22,
2003)

HIGHTSTOWN - Students at Hightstown High School have been forced to move from
two modular classrooms that have come under criticism lately for being unhealthy
and unsafe.
A school
official said yesterday that the move from one classroom was due to a positive
test for mold while the other modular classroom is overcrowded.

INDIO -- The Desert Sands Unified school board today is expected to declare a
state of emergency at Indio High School after environmental officials discovered
mold in one of the classrooms.
Officials
at the school recently reported the presence of foul odors in classroom IE-10,
an industrial education classroom that is served by two closet-sized photography
darkrooms.

School Mold: Dorms can aggravate student asthma (The BYU Newsnet, UT -
February 21, 2003)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
College apartment and dorm living can have an adverse affect on students with
asthma because these environments usually contain various allergens that can
trigger respiratory problems and asthma symptoms.
Symptoms
of asthma are usually progressive in response to triggers such as those commonly
experienced as part of dorm living, said Nancy Sander of the Asthma and Allergy
Network.
