Hope
everyone had a great Valentine's Day! The highlight of mine was a handmade
Valentine from my seven year old, who created the whole thing without help
from anyone.
My
four year old was a vision in red and white, complete with brand new red
patent letter shoes from her Grammie.
Mold closes health facilities (Leesburg Daily Commercial, FL - Feb 14, 2004)

Mold
is forcing the Lake County Health Department to vacate its Tavares and
Umatilla facilities.
Officials dealt with similar problems at the Leesburg facilities in
November, when results of a study showed the building had poor air quality.

LCC
Workers Sick From Mold (KVAL, OR - Feb 14, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eugene
- Lane Community College is ripping out thousands of yards of moldy carpet
this weekend in fear of more workers getting sick. About fifty people who
work in the building have been ill from the mold over the last two years.
The
moldy carpeting is behind the tarps. Crews are removing 4,000 square feet of
it that tested positive for mold and yeast. School officials say it has been
an ongoing problem.
Tempers
flare at Microb Phase meeting - Mold spray results are in, questions linger
(Fairfield Minuteman, CT - Feb 13, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EASTON
- A special Easton Board of Education meeting convened to discuss test
results of Samuel Staples Elementary School ceiling tiles, sprayed with a
mystery agent by a New York State company under investigation for potential
environmental crimes, became heated when a building committee member and the
town's health director squared off.
Beverlee Dacey, one of the committee members who sparked a local and federal
probe of Microb Phase Laboratories, grilled Town Health Director Christopher
Michos, whom, she thought, did not respond aggressively enough to early
warning signs about the company.

Mold,
insurance problems stagger family (New Haven Register, CT - Feb 11, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ANSONIA - Jim and Karen Verrinder say their lives have been turned upside
down since a plumbing problem caused a mold outbreak in their Platt Street
home almost six months ago.
The
Verrinders, of 27 Platt St., say they waited 11 days before an adjuster from
Allstate Insurance Co. showed up to inspect the damage. The company had told
them to leave things as they were in the meantime, the family said. In that
time, the wetness caused black mold to grow in many parts of the house,
including on clothing, toys and books, the couple says.
MOLD
EDUCATION: Antifungal Drugs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A
number of different antifungal agents are available. Agents in use for
humans and animals are sometimes used in environmental, industrial and
agricultural settings, but there are agents that are useful on plants but
not humans or animals.
Antimetabolites: This class has only one example, flucytosine. This small
molecule is a DNA substrate analog that leads to incorrect DNA synthesis.///
Azoles: There are many agents of this class now available. All inhibit the
synthesis of ergosterol by blocking the action of 14-alpha-demethylase.
Example: Fluconazole /// Glucan Synthesis inhibitors: Agents of this class
inhibit glucan synthesis. Glucan is a key component of the fungal cell wall,
and inhibition of this enzyme produces significant antifungal effects.
Example: Caspofungin /// Polyenes: These very potent agents act by binding
to the fungal cell membrane and causing the fungus to leak electrolytes.
Example: Amphotericin B /// Miscellaneous systemic agents: This class
currently contains only one agent, griseofulvin. It acts by disrupting the
mitotic spindle.

SCHOOL MOLD: Moisture Problem': Ottway School Library Closed,
Third-Graders Moved, As Precaution (Greeneville Sun, TN - Feb 13, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greene County school officials, in a precautionary move Wednesday, closed
the library and moved students from a third-grade classroom at Ottway
Elementary School when a "moisture problem" was discovered in the two rooms.
After
a similar moisture problem was discovered in another classroom at the school
last October, several different types of mold were found growing behind old
paneling in a second-grade classroom.
MOLD & INSURANCE: Family finding Isabel hassles a tiresome struggle
(Baltimore Sun, MD - February 16, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A
few days after Tropical Storm Isabel flooded their Millers Island home with
more than 3 feet of water, Dale and Georgia Poling watched a dozen workers
jump out of a truck and scramble into the house, ready to stop mold that was
spreading across the walls.
What
the Polings soon found out was that such piecemeal repairs - replacing only
the portion of the wall that touched water - are standard procedure under
the National Flood Insurance Program.

Very
funny site, but can be a bit racy. One of my favorites is the Carpal Tunnel
Onset Accellerator. As the site explains:
Welcome to the Carpal Tunnel Onset Accelerator. Carpal tunnel syndrome, a
condition caused by repetitive motion, has somehow gotten a bad reputation
in recent years. We feel this negative association is unwarranted and
unfair. After all, how bad can a medical condition be when it: 1) provides
us with a reason to take time off from our jobs, 2) gives us the opportunity
to meet new and exciting people (such as physical therapists and surgeons),
and 3) makes us feel a part of a growing and close-knit community of carpal
tunnel sufferers. Feeling left out of this growing trend? Well, the Carpal
Tunnel Onset Accelerator can help. Simply click each and every link below,
in order, without exception, and you will join the thousands of individuals
whose lives have been changed by carpal tunnel forever. Let's get started!
