Dear C,
Well, I finished my trial on Friday. I won't have the judgment for a
week or so -- it was a Court trial. I'm usually a jury person, but I
took over the case on a Friday, with trial starting the next
morning, so I went with what was there. (Keep your fingers crossed
for me!)
Since I didn't have time to do a media review, I've thrown in a
couple extra mold articles. This week's photo is of Cladosporium
spp., from Phillip Fry's website, www.mold.ph.
Hot tips on mold? Please let me know. Send information to CMulvihill@cmsynergy.com,

Mold destroys house of family's dreams (Gwinnett Daily Post, GA -
Oct 10, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DACULA - Before she was evicted earlier this month, walking through
Sandra Boyett's house was sort of like taking a tour of the Titanic.
Her grandson's shoes lay exactly where he took them off last
October. Her daughter's clothing was strewn on the floor - she
didn't have time to pick it up before the family moved out of the
house. If you looked closely, you could see the mold particles that
coated everything in the Dacula house. For Boyett, the mold was just
the beginning of the nightmare.
The mold started growing soon after Boyett installed an air
purification system from Pureatech, a Norcross air filter company.
Boyett believes the system may have been improperly installed,
leading to the mold growth, a charge Pureatech officials vehemently
deny.
Preventive Maintenance Protects Home and Health (The Ledger, FL -
Oct 9, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Does your home suffer from PMS -- poor maintenance syndrome? Regular
maintenance will protect the health of your house -- and its
occupants. Homes, like people and automobiles, function best when
given proper care.
"Some common-sense, routine checks and basic `how-to' skills can go
a long way in helping keep a house in tiptop shape," said Michael
Kuhn, chief home investigator of HouseMaster, a privately held home-
inspection company based in Bound Brook, N.J.

Don't listen to rumors about school mold (Easton Courier, CT -
Oct 7, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No one should be surprised to learn that more mold was found at
Samuel Staples Elementary School. Mold has been an ongoing problem
there for quite some time. This time mold was discovered over Labor
Day weekend in Room 11 of the school, which is in the lower level.
The school administrators took the correct steps in sealing off that
room and starting remediation work right away.
Then the administration and the Easton Board of Education agreed to
test the rest of the lower wing for mold. The test results are back,
and apparently there's mold in every classroom, along with the media
center, the computer lab and the music room.
Charley, Frances, Jeanne & Ivan Follow-Up: Ivan mold damage
closes Baldwin complex (AL.com, AL - Oct 8, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ROBERTSDALE -- Three weeks after Hurricane Ivan swept through
Baldwin County, residents of 37 Robertsdale apartment units found
themselves the latest victims to lose their homes when their complex
was ordered closed.
Leaks from roof and wall damage at Briarwood Estates apartments on
Berner Road behind Robertsdale High School have allowed mold and
mildew to grow to the point that it has become a health hazard, said
managers and residents.

Mold runs rampant in Fort Belvoir barracks - Housing, maintenance
officials seek source of problem (Belvoir Eagle, VA - Oct 7, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sgt. Mason T. Lowery described his room in McRee Barracks as musty,
damp, swampy and unclean. Lowery lives in Building No. 2102, Tower E
in Room 104 of the barracks. Lowery did not hesitate in expressing
his concern toward mold, a fungus that grew rampantly while he was
out of town for a month.
After taking a trip to Maine from Aug. 30 to Sept. 30, the Soldier
returned to a mold-infested abode. "I opened the door and I was like
'Oh God,'" Lowery, 28, said. Mold covered his futon bed, carpet,
Velcro watchbands, and mountain bicycle, gloves and ceiling vents.
Methodist Hospital Building Closed For Black Mold (WFIE-TV, IN -
Oct 7, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There's a new type of health risk being seen at Methodist Hospital
in Henderson - black mold. Their building at the south Y has been
infested with the slimy black substance.
Hospital administrator Bruce Begley told the Gleaner that, although
there is not very much of it, he decided to pull employees out of
that building so they would not be in harm's way.

Court Mold: Courthouse Problem was 'in the Air' (WISH, IN - Oct
7, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Martinsville) - The Morgan County courthouse, which has been
plagued by environmental problems, will reopen. But that won't
happen before some major work and cleaning takes place.
The historic building on the Martinsville town square has some
issues to air out. A federal health and safety team took just two
days to figure out what was causing Morgan County workers to get
sore throats, headaches and breathing problems: dirty air.
School Mold: Forum on Staple mold reveals: more mold (Fairfield
Minuteman, CT - Oct 7, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EASTON - Superintendent of Schools Allen Fossbender and Finance and
Operations Director Keith McLiverty are working on a plan to
remediate mold in the lower wing of Samuel Staples Elementary
School. If the mold removal plan is implemented, some students may
be moved out of the school.
Toxic black mold was found in Room 11, and high numbers of
cladosporum spores were discovered in the media center, music and
computer rooms. Those rooms were closed off during the summer. In an
Oct. 1 press release, Fossbender said the entire lower wing, in
addition to the already-closed rooms, would be vacated should a
complete clean up need to be performed, with some classes being
moved to Helen Keller Middle School.

Mold & Insurance: N.Y. Agents Gather to Chat About Industry
(Insurance Journal - Oct 10, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Professional Insurance Agents of New York State Inc. celebrated
the success of its second annual Hudson Valley Regional Awareness
Program recently as about 250 insurance professionals attended the
conference. The event, held at the Holiday Inn in Suffern, N.Y.,
offered participants the opportunity to take part in a panel
discussion on the insurance market; earn continuing education
credits; network with colleagues; and more.
"The central location and timeliness of the education programs
contributed greatly to the success of this year's Hudson Valley
RAP," said D. Scott Liebert, chair of Hudson Valley RAP and director
for PIANY. "Insurance professionals from Albany to New York City
came to discuss the insurance issues that affect their businesses
and their clients, and they left with new ideas and practices."
Mold Litigation: Current, former Elsmere officials sued Town acted
improperly in condemning apartment complex, ex-owners say (The News
Journal, DE - Oct 5, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The former owners of an Elsmere apartment complex condemned in 2002
because of mold problems have filed a federal lawsuit against
several town officials. The suit claims the town acted improperly
when it closed nearly 40 buildings without allowing owners the
opportunity to be heard or correct the problem.
Elsmere Park Club L.P., which owned the Fenwick Park Apartments, is
seeking compensatory damages to be determined at trial, according to
documents filed late last week at U.S. District Court in Wilmington.
Elsmere Park's attorney, Douglas F. Schleicher of Philadelphia, did
not say how much his clients were seeking.

Charley, Frances, Jeanne & Ivan Follow-Up: The storm has passed,
but the mold remains (Boca Beacon, FL - Oct 8, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After Hurricane Charley struck, island local Alison Smith was
surprised to find bluish green mold across the damaged walls of her
home. "It wasn't the first thing I looked for, after the shock of
losing a roof," she said. Her repairs are numerous, and growing,
along with the mold. "Mold is a fact of life in Florida, but this is
different. It's taking over the house."
An insurance adjuster came one week after Hurricane Charley and
Smith still hasn't received anything in writing. "I do understand,
but, who wants to pay out of pocket?" The mold spreads.
Davie residents cite leaks in new townhomes (Sun-Sentinel.com, FL
- Oct 8, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DAVIE · With its high ceilings, lakefront view and unusual
architecture, Madison Lakes, a new salmon- colored townhouse complex
west of University Drive, looks picture perfect.
But at least six homeowners in the 45-unit community say those looks
are deceiving. What is not so obvious, they say, is that water comes
in through their baseboards and windows, their garages leak and in
some cases have mold. Cosmetic problems the builder promised to fix
have never been addressed, they claim.

This is a very funny Monday through Thursday show on Commedy Network
(at 8 p.m. and repeated at 10 p.m., in California). But wait --
there's "Internet Only" headlines. Take the following: AN OFFICER
AND A MENTAL MAN
"Everyone knows there are constitutional qualifications one has to
meet in order to run for President of the United States: you have to
be at least 35 years old, you have to have born in this country, and
you have to agree to sit down with your wife and be interviewed by
Dr. Phil. Therefore, last week, George W. Bush and his wife, Laura,
met with Dr. Phil and his wife, Robin. This week, Dr. Phil and his
wife sat down for a chat with Democratic candidate John Kerry and
his lovely but often foul-mouthed wife, Teresa . . .
