Dear C,

This should be the last of the "old mold." If anyone knows of anyone working on the case or claim the first story discusses, out of professional curiousity, I'd like to find out what type of mold was found.

This week's photo is of Penicillium notatum - the mold that the drug Penicillin comes from. The photo is from the Words, Words, Words section of www.io.com, which discusses the origin of the word Penicillin. Penicillin has the same origins as the word pencil. The word penicil originally meant a very fine brush. Penicillin notatum looks like a very fine brush under microscope.

Hot tips on mold? Please let me know. Send information to CMulvihill@cmsynergy.com, Cynthia Coulter Mulvihihll, Esq Hyde Mulvihill APC 216 W. Foothill Boulevard Monrovia CA 91016.

Scum from the spa tub's jets could be mold in the system (Boston Globe, MA - Nov 24, 2004

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quite often I get what I call scummies from the jets of my spa tub. The tub is used two or three times a week, and those black scummies are rather unpleasant, to say the least. How can I get rid of them?
We suspected that the scummies are mold that somehow got into the system, and treating with household bleach will handle it, but we did not know how to get it in the system. So we called Salem Plumbing Supply/Designer Bath in Beverly, where sales rep Anne DeLucia told us all we needed to know.
Lee teachers seek class action case status over indoor air quality problems (Naples Daily News, FL - Nov 16, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Teachers and other staff say they were exposed to so much toxic mold and other harmful substances in Lee County schools that some want to band together against the district in a class action lawsuit.

Some of the nine Lee County School District teachers or staff testified Tuesday before Lee County Circuit Judge William C. McIver in their quest to turn their 2002 civil suit into a class action case. Their suit contends that while working in at least five specific schools, they all suffered health problems - some requiring surgeries - because of hazardous exposure to toxic mold, asbestos, mildew, carbon dioxide and lead-based paint.

MAGNOLIA - Magnolia's 4B Corporation has recommended the city not continue with litigation against the builder of City Hall. (Conroe Courier, TX - Nov 21, 2004)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
City Hall was shut down July 7, 2003 because of mold found throughout the building caused by leaks. Magnolia's City Council will make a final decision about potential litigation at Tuesday's meeting. The city's former legal firm Olson and Olson sent a letter to the city's 4B corporation in which they stated there was less than a 50 percent chance the city would recover funds. The estimated cost of the trial was $64,000, according to the letter.
Magnolia has already spent $200,000 in legal fees relating to construction problems at the City Hall and the expense to move from the building, said Councilwoman Patsy Williams. The city has already spent more than $1 million on the building
Mold Education: Lab Procedures and diagnosing fungal infections using Histopathology.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Histopathology remains one of the major tools of diagnosis in mycology. The major advantages of histopathology are speed, low-cost, and the ability to provide a presumptive identification of the infecting fungus, as well as demonstrating the tissue reaction.

However, unless special techniques such as immunofluorescence are used, or the infecting fungus possesses unique structures such as spherules, definitive identification of the etiologic agent by histopathology is difficult. Nevertheless, it usually provides essential information before the fungus can be isolated in a mycology laboratory. Furthermore, histopathology is the only way to diagnose infections caused by Loboa loboi or Rhinosporidium seeberi, as cultivation techniques have to date been unsuccessful.

After 4 Hurricanes, Trailers and Homelessness (The Ledger, FL - Nov 25, 2004)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MIAMI, Nov. 24 - Kelly Terrell's family of four is staying in an eight-foot-wide trailer on a concrete lot, surrounded by highways, megastores and a place called Bingo Paradise. The walls are thin, the neighbors too close, the bathroom too small to turn around in.
As they wait for housing, many people are still battling insurance companies and trying to determine whether they will need to rebuild from scratch, which will mean meeting tougher, more expensive code requirements. Many insurance policies do not cover mold cleanup, though ironically, mold sprouted in many homes after insurance companies told the owners not to touch the damage until an adjustor visited, FEMA officials said.
Mold & Litigation: Jail Employees' Lawsuit Against County Settled (Pulaski Citizen, TN - Nov 26, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

One of several lawsuits related to faulty construction and the subsequent mold problems at the Giles County Correctional Facility has been settled. The county commission voted Nov. 15 to provide funds necessary to satisfy provisions of the settlement, which was reached in August. Prior to Oct. 11 all parties, with the exception of the county commission, had ratified the agreement.

The parties have signed an agreement to "fully and finally compromise and settle" all claims "which they have asserted" or "could have asserted" or "which may arise in the future" concerning alleged exposure to mold, mildew, biologic substances or poor air quality in the jail.

Mold & Technology: Fuzz-Free Strawberries Forecast with New Food Safety Treatment (Newswise - Nov 22, 2004)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Newswise - Open up a pint of strawberries from the grocery store, and more often than not you'll find a fuzzy berry or two in the mix. A blast of chlorine dioxide gas, however, promises to not only keep those berries fuzz-free, but also to kill off harmful bacteria living on their surface more efficiently than methods currently used by the food industry, say Purdue University researchers.
"Strawberries are tricky," said Rich Linton, professor of food science and one of the leaders of the current study on decontaminating strawberries. "They're notoriously difficult to clean, and their surface composition actually encourages bugs to grow."
